NOMTFA Season Archives
HISTORY and Evolution: (NOMTFA – the Four ERAs)
ERA 1 – The Foundation (1981-1993)
Achievements included:
Establishment of the league in 1981 – principals included Mike Smith, Peter Morris and Brian Worts (à la Montreal style) – the three lasted until about 1993
Former Tiger-cats, Argos and even Frank Dunn of Nortel fame also played in the league along with Bob Davidson, Clyde Hencher, Bob Ingram
Bob Betts ran the referee pool – and refs were paid – but were unofficial officials. A ref named "Ken" had a rude hat that he would point to when needed.
Founding Principles: Everyone was there for a good time - An end of year “Buffet” soirée with a formal awards ceremony was hosted to celebrate the season, thank the wives/girlfriends, who allowed players to be boys for a while.
Games were on both Saturdays and Sundays at White Oaks Secondary School
ERA 2 – Transition Years – some floundering in the wilderness (1993-2003) 1993-99 – a stream of different men took up the cause – including Jim Ryan, Anton Burnatowski & Bob Ingram.
Achievements included:
Formal newsletters that were printed, folded and mailed
John Lake began keeping statistical records using dBASE.
1999-2003 – during this time Tim Niblett and Alan Hrynyshyn emerged as the principal NOMTFA movers… (along with Bob Ingram) and were joined by Patrick Wallwork, Daniel Neibert, Marc Nantel and David Fisher.
Achievements included:
In 2000, Marc Nantel takes over the stats (on the simpler Excel format)
From 2001, a weekly electronic newsletter was sent out with scores and stats (Marc Nantel)
In 2002, Geoff Johnson started the NOMTFA Website
And voilà, in 2003, through Alan Hrynyshyn, the Winter Season begins
The move to Crusaders’ Fields
ERA 3 – The FISCAL Turnaround 2003-2009 - Dan Neibert, Marc Nantel, David Fisher & Bob Ingram.
Achievements: A bank account in the black due to the following fiscal principles:
“no pay – no play” and a mandate for full sponsorship of the teams.
The number of teams was determined by full rosters. (5 and "almost" just 4 teams)
The OCHO Bowl - 2007 & 2008
The move to Pine Glen for our Winter Season - 2008
ERA 4 – We are here - Today
Achievements include:
The Crusaders Stairs - 2009
Current Principals: Steve Rusynyk, Joe Cardi, Drew Todd, Andrew Salamon, Clyde Hencher, Ken Horton and Loe Smeyers!
In 2002, a new and special
award was created to recognize the outstanding contribution of one man each year
who best exemplifies the principles of teamwork, sportsmanship and the NOMTFA
ideals of even and fair competition as identified by the league.
The award is given in memory of Bruce Spencer who passed away in early 2002 at the age 40. Bruce ran
Corbett's Sporting Goods and all who knew him recognized him as a good sport. Bruce, according to friends, was the kind of person who would give you the shirt
off of his back and would never say no to any request. He was a tremendous person who always left people feeling better for having talked with him and is
sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
A trust was has been set up in, Bruce’s son, Jordan's name to which NOMTFA has contributed in the past. Anybody wanting to
donate to Jordan's trust should contact Marc Nantel at (905) 465-2232.

NOMTFA Season Records
NOMTFA is a league which promotes fun and friendship, and does
not select "All-Stars" or promote individual accomplishments over
team goals. However, each year, several men are recognized for their achievements
throughout the season in the following categories: most points, most interceptions
and most sacks. Each individual achievement is only possible through the concerted
effort of the entire team of guys who support, encourage and assist on every
play and during every game.
So here they are: the statistics of each leader in each category
and the teams that helped them to accomplish their lofty season goals.
Please Note:
If you have any information regarding past NOMTFA season record holders
for any of the above categories please contact
David Fisher, NOMFTA Webmaster. (webmaster@nomtfa.ca)
Your help to get this past historical information updated would be greatly
appreciated.
